Shaun Farrell continues his series of articles looking back at the 2009/10 season this time taking a look at how the defeats have effected Wigan Athletic this past season, over to you Faz:

Well after a game like the one against Chelsea yesterday I suppose there is no better place to start continuing my articles than with something that we have had far too many of this season, Defeats.

Let`s be honest this season as most of the pundits have said we never knew which Wigan was going to turn up. Could it be the one that demolished Chelsea and Liverpool at home, the team that showed fight togetherness and passion or like yesterday could it be the team that are poor, passionless and about as much bite as a toothless dog! Unfortunately for us over the course of the season we`ve seen that toothless old dog too much.

Each time we seem to have found ourselves as a team we have followed it with shocking results. For instance opening day of the season we destroy Aston Villa with class and style, 4 days later we line up against newly promoted Wolves and lose 1 nil at home. In fact this has probably been the one consistent of our season, if we win with style we lose the next game badly. West ham followed by 4 nil away at Arsenal, 3-1 at Burnley followed by 4 nil to Portsmouth, 1 nil at home to Liverpool followed by 4 nil to Bolton.

But not only have their been losses following this pattern their has also been shocking results that should never of happened. 9-1 obviously springs to mind in the game that saw the end of Eric Edmans Wigan Athletic career. The less said about that game the better but the most amazing thing about it is that we haven`t learnt the lessons.

Look I know that we didn`t play a full team against Chelsea and I know that we played 11 men and the ref but I`ll guarantee you that if someone had been up for the fight from Wigan at 3 nil down and put his foot in and even dare I say possibly caused a few minor niggles to Chelsea they wouldn`t of chanced pushing on for more goals when it may cost them a World Cup place. That to me has been the biggest problem of our season we have lacked the player that would take a red card if it meant we wouldn`t get beaten badly. The worst thing is that at the start of the season we had two in Cattermole and Brown.

Maybe that`s something that Martinez should be thinking about!
