There comes a day when even your faithful bulldog moves on. And for our dear companion Jake Fred Buxton, that time is now. You see, dear reader, Lancashire is not his ‘true’ home – Nottinghamshire is, and he wishes to be closer to his county of birth.

Yes – Buxton has cancelled his contract with Wigan Athletic by mutual consent. He had two years left to run on his three-year deal, but those will not now be fulfilled.

During his eleven-month stay at Wigan, ‘Freddie’ made a total of 43 competitive appearances, scoring one goal – that one against Wolverhampton Wanderers in February. You know, the one that was supposed to spark a series of victories that led to survival. But it certainly ain’t his fault it did not.

This celebrated centre back won’t just be remembered for that bullet header, but for how he played every minute with tongue between teeth, his face a picture of extreme concentration. Those Herculean goal line blocks were worth the entrance fee alone, and not just because we’ve had nothing else to cheer this season. Ooooh noooo.

Referees were certainly in admiration – the amount of cards he received from ‘delighted’ whistlemen is matched only by Vegas hustlers on Christmas Day.

So farewell, Bulldog Buxton – you’ll be missed by many. Wherever you may go, and whatever you may do, we shall never boo – and shame on those that do!
