Wigan Athletic left back Erik Edman is set to join FC Twente Enschede on a free transfer in January after Latics boss Roberto Martinez agreed to allow the Sweden international leave the club with former Manchester City defender Michael Ball to take Edmans place at the DW Stadium.

FC Twente, who are managed by former England coach Steve McClaren, are currently top of the Dutch league and are set for Champions League qualification next season giving Edman one final challenge in his career.

McClaren is an admirer of the Swede and a deal is reportedly as good as done.
