Doubts Over Thomas – Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic midfield man Hendry Thomas looks like he could be facing a spell on the sidelines following a hefty challenge by Preston striker Jon Parkin in last nights Carling Cup game.

The Preston forward, who carries the nickname The Beast due to his formidable bulk, isn`t the subtlest of players and he was throwing his weight around following his introduction to the game as a 54th minute substitute.

Parkin challenged Thomas for the ball around the half way line and the Latics midfield man was left writhing in agony and Latics boss Roberto Martinez was left fuming with the ferocity of the tackle which led to lengthy treatment and the eventual withdrawal of Thomas from the game.

Speaking about the injury to Thomas and his condition Martinez said: “It`s too early to say exactly what`s wrong with Hendry, but he has a nasty little cut on the inside of his shin which has swelled up quite badly”

“There were three what I thought were dangerous challenges on our players in the second half, and we need to assess Franco (di Santo) and Ronnie (Stam) as well.

“Franco got a nasty kick on his ankle and he was not feeling too good after the game, while Ronnie had very lucky escape from another bad tackle.

“But Hendry is the one we are probably feeling most concerned about, and we`ll be assessing him later today.”
