The Daily Star are linking Wigan Athletic with a move to bring Manchester United and Republic of Ireland midfield man Darron Gibson to the DW Stadium on a season long loan deal.

Gibson had a proposed move to Premier League rivals Sunderland fall through, allegedly due to the players personal demands, but with United boss Sir Alex Ferguson making it clear that the 23 year old is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford there would be a possibility of this deal coming off.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez was keen to capture Tom Cleverley for another season but Ferguson wants the England under 21 international to make the step to the United first team squad, so that deal wont happen, Gibson may provide an option for Martinez who wants a competitive midfield to build his team around.
