Latics boss Owen Coyle says he is hopeful that Norway international Thomas Rogne will be fit to take his place in the starting line-up for the season opener at Barnsley this weekend, despite the former Celtic defender having to leave the field on a stretcher in Saturdays friendly against Dundee United

Rogne was injured when he took a nasty fall on 26 minutes after making a clearing header whilst under pressure from a Dundee United player, the big centre back landed heavily on his back and it was quite evident that he was in severe discomfort, the 23 year old apparently suffering from back spasms

Coyle is hopeful that Rogne will make a suitable recovery to take his place in the team for the trip to Oakwell, speaking to the media Coyle said – ‘It looked like Thomas took a knock in the back, and then landed on the same spot which made it worse’

‘We think it’s some kind of back spasm, which will hopefully ease in the next few days and we’ll see how he is.

‘I’m certainly not ruling him out for Barnsley, but obviously he would have to step it up later in the week.

‘Ideally we would have liked him to have got at least half a game under his belt, but that wasn’t to be.’

Making his debut on Saturday at the DW Stadium against Dundee United the big defender looked quite accomplished, he was composed at the back and also offered a threat at set pieces in the opposition box, he went close to scoring on two occasions with powerful headers, on first glimpse, and to be honest considering he only played 26 minutes, it was the merest of glimpses, Rogne looks a good acquisition, hopefully he will make Saturday and put this injury behind him

Community Shield Travel

Vital Latics family coaches are once again heading down to Wembley for the third time in five months, having played and won the FA Cup semi-final, then of course winning the Cup final at England’s national stadium, it is time to make the trip again as Wigan Athletic take part in this seasons Community Shield game against Manchester United

With some hard bargaining the cost as been brought down and the price of a return ticket on the Family Coach is just £27:50. We will be using the same pick-up points as we used for our two previous trips and we will also be stopping off at Bicester once again

As with the last two trips we will also be supporting Josephs Goal by means of a raffle and quiz

There is a breakfast buffet (£6:50) available at our stop off for those who wish to have a spot of breakie, for more details and how to book please click here
