Wigan Athletic have announced that they have successfully appealed Conor Sammon’s red card that he received at Old Trafford on Boxing Day

The Latics striker was given his marching orders for the most innocuous of fouls by referee Phil Dowd, a decision that had the entire football world scratching their heads has now been overturned by the FA and Sammon is eligible to take his place on Saturday for the visit to the Britannia Stadium to face Stoke.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez: ‘We thank the panel for their decision, which is the correct one. We now need to draw a line under the matter and move on. I am delighted to have Conor available for the next three matches.’

‘It would have been really unfair for him to share the frustrating feeling that he had on Monday for another three games after doing nothing wrong.’
