Wigan Athletic keeper Chris Kirkland looks like he could be heading off to Championship club Leicester City on loan until January at least.
Since Ali Al-Habsi was installed into the first team against Hartlepool United back in August, Kirkland has been unable to shift the Oman international and has been consigned to the substitutes bench, except for the Bolton game that Al-Habsi was ineligible to play in.
The Daily Mirror are reporting that Kirkland is set to join Leicester, his home town club, after the weekend game when the Latics face Manchester United at Old Trafford, and that if the loan spell is successful then Kirkland could make the move a permanent one come January.
If this is true then Al-Habsi`s loan deal with the Latics must also be set to become a permanent one or it could leave the club in a very sticky position. It looks like Mike Pollitt, who has just recovered from elbow surgery, could be stepping up to number two goalkeeper again, with Latics only other professional keeper, youngster Lee Nicholls, inexperienced and also currently on loan at Hartlepool.
Speaking about the proposed loan move for Kirkland Latics boss Roberto Martinez said: “Chris is working well and training at a fantastic level”
“He needs to play football to regain his full level and so I will speak to Chris and make the right decision in that respect.
“He has not missed a training session in eight weeks and you can recall a goalkeeper in 24 hours if you need him.”
