Wigan Athletic keeper Chris Kirkland`s proposed loan move to Championship club Cardiff City never materialised and the big shot stopper is, for the time being at least, fighting for his place in the Latics squad.

It would appear that the loan fee was the main stumbling block with Latics boss Roberto Martinez confirming that Cardiff had made an approach, but also saying that terms just couldn`t be agreed.

Martinez said: “A move for Chris was a possibility last week but now there`s no chance, it`s finished”

“It`s important he gets that bit of competitive football to help him regain match sharpness

“Cardiff did come in for Chris and he thought it may have been a good option for him.

“We just couldn`t agree terms for one reason or another. Chris is happy to try and fight for his place.”
