Wigan Athletic defender Pascal Chimbonda has been called up into the French squad for the World Cup in Germany.

Chimbonda is on the transfer list for £6 million after requesting a transfer and has been the subject of £3 million bids from both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the last week. However, a French international call-up could add a couple of million pounds to his valuation.

Paul Jewell said: ‘The call-up is a reflection of how well he has played for us throughout the season and is fully deserved in my mind, as well as being a great boost for the club and a reflection of how the coaching staff here at Wigan have believed in him all season, and encouraged him to prove his potential on the Premiership stage. Ideally, of course, I would love to keep him here but, if he does go, we will not be selling him for less than he’s worth. A player who has not only made the PFA team of the year, but now also the French World Cup squad, is a prized asset for anyone and it was Wigan Athletic who took the gamble on him last summer.’
