Can Wigan Clinch Any Last Minute Signings?

Danny McCann takes a quick look at transfer deadline day activity concerning the Latics, over to you Danny:

At the moment of writing this, Latics` only signing so far is the Chilean midfielder Jean Beausejour, 27 from Birmingham on a two-and-a-half year deal.

As this relatively quiet winter transfer period is in its final stages clubs from all over the country are frantically trying to secure last minute deals.

So perhaps Latic`s fans will see one more signing in the nick of time with Watford having accepted a bid for their defender Adrian Mariappa.

The 25-year-old has been targeted by a number of Premier League teams such as Newcastle United and Arsenal.

His capture will certainly bolster the lacklustre defence and provide much needed competition for places.

Hoping that Wigan can keep hold of their best players for the final push, fans will be holding their breathes as to whether tonight`s match against Tottenham Hotspur will be the last that Hugo Rodallega will play for Latics.

With increasing speculation over the Columbian strikers` future, it is being rumoured that he may well play against Spurs and then later have a medical with them in a deadline day signing.

This would be a blow for Wigan as evidently scoring goals is the main area they need to improve.

I think one signing that would have been good to see at Wigan would have been Michael Owen from Manchester United especially considering Brighton had been linked with a possible move for the injury prone striker.

United`s fifth choice forward would have bought a bit of composure to his finishing and I am sure he would have thrived off being the most important player at the club.

Whether he would have wanted to come is another question though. It has been commented by many about Owens desire to prove himself at another club.

Here is a list of realistic signings that Wigan could have made that would surely have helped the squad pick up more points:

Michael Owen
Ravel Morrison (The talented Manchester United youngster who has just signed for West Ham)
Niko Kranjcar (Tottenham Hotspur benchwarmer)
Zaha (The Crystal Palace flying winger has impressed recently but maybe his price tag would have been too big)
Nikola Zigic (The towering striker that Birmingham are looking to sell – he would be a threat in the air and a vital weapon for Latics` attack)

Tomorrow will put an end to the transfer window and a last chance for Wigan to strengthen their squad. Let`s hope that the last 16 games will provide enough points (and luck) to keep Wigan Athletic up.
