As Wigan manager Steve Bruce says – ‘It was never going to be a classic with our pitch – at least it’ll improve when the rugby starts in two weeks!’

An obviously poor JJB Stadium pitch always held back the possibility of this game becoming a spectacle for the fans. Ultimately, Nicolas Anelka’s first goal for Chelsea early in the second half and Shaun Wright-Phillips finish five minutes from time proved to much for the Latics’ – who netted late on through a fine Antoine Sibierski volley and saw Marcus Bent smack the bar in injury time.

Bruce believes the incident which caught the attention in the second half, a supposed off the ball incident involving Michael Brown and Claude Makelele, wasn’t seen by anyone despite fierce protests from the Chelsea bench.

Alas, he saw the game as a missed opportunity, claiming individual errors were the cause of the defeat.
