Wigan Athletic head off to Austria on Wednesday for a 10 day training camp as they prepare for the new season and manager Steve Bruce reckons it will be an ideal time to speak to central defender Paul Scharner about signing a new contract with the club.

Bruce told the Wigan Evening Post:

‘We have been talking to Paul and I hope we are close to a deal.

‘Probably an ideal time to speak more is when we’re in Austria; we can
throw him off the side of a mountain if he doesn’t sign!

‘I really hope we can keep him. When we moved Paul back into the defence last season, he was a major factor in why we did so well.

‘He is a very good player and has done extremely well at Latics that is why we want to tie up a deal for him.

‘We’ll do whatever we possibly can, and I think we are closer to agreeing something than we were a couple of months ago.

‘There are still a couple of small things we need to agree on.’

Paul Scharner appears to be in no hurry to sign a new deal, indeed when I spoke to him at the ‘Player of the Year` awards evening back in May he stated then that what ever happens he still has another year to run on his current contract so there was plenty of time to sort out a new one.

Scharner, as we all know is a bit of a character and likes to do things his way, but I genuinely believe he loves his football at the Latics and I think he likes the drama of all this contract talk.

He told the WEP:

‘We are talking, but there is nothing new I can say at the moment.

‘There is plenty of time to sort something out.

‘I’m just looking forward to the new season. It was a long summer break, especially the first part of it when I couldn’t do anything after the operation on my nose.

‘The training camp in Austria should be good; it is a lovely part of the country. I spent a couple of weeks nearby earlier in the summer.’
