Sheffield United manager Kevin Blackwell is keen to get Wigan Athletic midfield man David Cotterill on board ready for the challenges of the new season.

Cotterill spent the second half of last season on loan at Bramall Lane from the JJB as the young Wales international tired to see some first team action and made 16 appearance for the South Yorkshire club.

With Antonio Valencia on the right of the Latics midfield Cotterill will see his chances of a place in the starting line somewhat limited at the Premier League club and he has openly said that he would welcome making his move to Sheffield United a permanent one.

Kevin Blackwell is hopeful about getting his man told the BBC:

‘Cotterill has made it quite clear that he wants to come back and we are in negotiations with Wigan.

‘I am hopeful, but in football you can never say it will definitely happen until the deal is completed.’

It is believed that Latics are trying to recoup most of the £2.5 million that they paid Bristol City for Cotterill and a bid in the region of £2 million is required to make the deal go through
