Baines, a product of Wigans youth academy, is building up an impressive collection of goals and is gaining a reputation as one of the best left backs in the country.

After scoring his first goal almost two years ago against Ipswich Town in the Championship, from 40-yards out, Baines doubled his overall tally after scoring from similar range against the Germans for the Under 21s. He then added a third from 30-yards out when he hit a perfect free kick past the despairing Edwin Van Der Saar.

Steve McClaren has a friendly against the Netherlands coming up, and hinted that he may try out palyers from the Under 21s, a hint Bainsey hopes will earn him his first ever senior cap.

Speaking to the Official Website, Baines said: ‘I would like to be in with a shout. Whether that will happen, I am not sure. Results in the senior side are not going well.’

And on his goal agaisnt United, Baines said: ‘I took confidence from that goal (for the Under 21s) into the United game. Kevin Kilbane just told me to go for it and luckily I scored.’

Baines chances of a senior England call up ahve been boosted by the fact Chelseas Ashley Cole is suspended for the next game, leaving the left back position vacant.
