Down the years the Latics and Reading have met 43 times.

Latics have 18 wins, Reading 15, draws 10.

The first ever game between the two sides was on August 26th 1978 when the Latics travelled to Elm Park, the previous home of Reading, and 5,033 spectators saw the home side run out 2-0 winners in the Fourth Division game, in the return fixture at Springfield Park in November that same year Latics got their revenge with a 3-0 win, they had started to find their feet in league football and would go on to have a very good season.

There have been a few memorable encounters with Reading down the years, but the one that jumps out to me is the game that took place on Sunday 8th May 2005.

Lying second in the Championship we knew a win would guarantee promotion to the Premier League and that’s exactly what we got. Goals from Lee McCulloch, Jason Roberts and Nathan Ellington put the Latics 3-0 up before Steve Sidwell grabbed a consolation for the visitors in the 90th minute. I still get goose bumps thinking about that day, I witnessed many a grown man in floods of tears, a fantastic occasion, a great result, but something that gets a little lost in the importance of it all, an excellent game of football played by the Latics.

A note of positivity, it is 10 years since we last lost at Reading.
