Wigan Athletic defender Antolin Alcaraz has had a stop start season so far and it looks like it might be stopped again following a suspected broken rib picked up in Saturdays win at West Brom.
The Paraguay international was on Copa America duty during the summer and returned to preseason training late meaning he missed the opening game against Norwich, in the next match, away at Swansea, the cultured centre-back made his first appearance of the season and was injured with a calf tear on 37 minutes, that put him out for six games.
The 29 year old player returned to the team in October and played the next four games against Bolton, Newcastle, Fulham and Wolves, only to be suspended retrospectively for spitting at an opponent in the game at Molineux and given a three match ban.
His first game back was Saturday and Alcaraz lasted for 67 minutes before injuring himself challenging West Brom striker Shane Long, if the fractured rib is confirmed then he could be out for up to six weeks.
A clearly disappointed Roberto Martinez speaking to Latics Player said: ‘Unfortunately Antolin has gone for an x-ray and the fear is that he has got a fractured rib.
‘He couldn’t breathe when he had to come off, I thought he was colossal alongside the rest of the backline.’
Alcaraz could be set to face more time on the side-line
