Wigan Athletic Ali Al-Habsi says he was delighted to keep a clean sheet in Tuesday nights Carling Cup victory against Hartlepool United up at Victoria Park in the on loan goalkeepers first competitive game of the season.

Al-Habsi joined in summer on a season long loan from Bolton Wanderers and has been chomping at the bit to get a taste of the action and stake a claim for a regular spot in the starting eleven.

With Chris Kirkland in anything but good form surely the Oman international deserves a run in the first team, especially with talk behind the scenes of making his switch 7 miles down the road a permanent one.

Al-Habsi says he is really happy at the Latics and that he has been made very welcome by all the players and coaching staff and he hopes to be given the chance to build on what was the clubs first clean sheet of the season on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the clubs official website Al-Habsi said: ‘When I arrived at the club it was important for me to enjoy my time here and to take any chance that comes my way.

‘I was delighted to keep a clean-sheet in my first appearance for the club and I’ll be doing my best in training to try and make the team for Saturday.

‘This is a fantastic football club, the manager and the players have all made me feel very welcome and settling in has been very easy.’

‘The first two games were very disappointing and as a result there was pressure on the team to perform against Hartlepool, but the result and the performance will give us a lot to build on for the Tottenham game this weekend.’

‘Overall it was a great win and a big bonus for us to keep our first clean-sheet of the season, and it’s set the standard for what we need to achieve in the league.”
