Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of Colchester United central midfield man Alex Gilbey on a three year deal after the Latics agreed a compensation package with the U’s.

The 21 year old has been sought after by Championship clubs following a string of excellent displays this past season, Bristol City were reportedly close to agreeing a deal around January but the Latics have got their man and he becomes the second permanent addition to the squad after Stephen Warnock joined from Derby a couple of weeks back

Speaking to the Latics official website about Gilbey, boss Gary Caldwell said – ”He’s exactly the sort of player and person who suits this club and we’re delighted to add him to the group for pre-season.

”He scored an excellent goal against us at Colchester last season and he was a standout player on the day, making him an excellent addition.”
