The Latics have opted to reinforce their attacking options with the capture of the flamboyant Shakhtar Donetsk star who will now be in contention to make his debut against Portsmouth on Saturday after receiving the green light from the Home Office.

Aghahowa has long been linked with a move to England and, after scoring 32 goals in 85 games for Shakhtar, will now join Wigan in their battle to avoid relegation from the top flight.

Jewell has also signed Caleb Folan to beef up his striking options and the Latics boss was delighted to secure the signature of the Super Eagles star.

‘We were confident the [work permit] appeal would go in our favour because Julius is a proven quality striker, with a pedigree which is unquestionable,’ Jewell told the club’s official website.

‘We’ve really done our homework on this one, while I’ve watched him personally on two occasions.

‘He’s quick, strong, aggressive, good with both feet and I’m sure he will adapt to the rigours of the Premiership.’

The striker, who comes to England with UEFA Champions League experience, is keen to make an immediate impression at The JJB Stadium.

‘I have dreamed of playing in England but until now, the chance hasn’t come,’ said the forward.

‘This is the most famous league in the world and I want to come and show the manager of Wigan and the fans what I can do.’
