Just three weeks before their League One campaign begins, Latics will welcome Liverpool back to the DW Stadium for a showpiece friendly. And we’re quite looking forward to it – so much so that we wrote this preview of an upcoming match preview. That we will probably remember to write.

If this contest is anything like the equivalent fixture on 17 July 2016, it will be well worth the 1500p price tag. Because on that day, Sanmi Odelusi almost scored a goal for Wigan Athletic, and such moments ought to be savoured like that extra cheesy final crisp in the packet.

Like last year, ‘Pool fans will be allocated the East Stand, with home supporters initially filling the West. This means that Latics followers (probably) won’t have to twist their necks 180 degrees like that girl from the Exorcist to see the scoreboard.

You’ll also get a good view of Paul Cook and Jurgen Klopp playing a raucous game of rock, paper, scissors in front of delighted dugouts. It`ll be the former’s first foray into competitive RPS, but also his first competitive game as boss of Wigan Athletic.

And there will actually be football… unlike last season’s showpiece friendly (‘showpiece’ being the operative word) with a certain Greater Manchester team, a strange-smelling piece of moulded plastic slowly melting in the July heat. And that’s not to mention the 3,000 disinterested kids playing a gargantuan game of Pokemon Go! In the West Stand.

This will be Liverpool’s second game of the pre-season, following a tussle with Tranmere on Wednesday 12 July. It will be Latics’ first of the pre-season, with trips to Southport, Notts County and Grimsby to follow before the new season begins in earnest on Saturday 5 August.

But the ‘New New New Era’, as I dared to term it just now, starts right here. Or on 14 July, anyway.
