Emmerson Boyce set a new Wigan Athletic Premier League appearance record on Saturday, when he took his place in the starting line-up against Villa, Boycey clocked up his 146th top flight game for the Latics, one more than former player Paul Scharner managed.
A massive fans favourite, the Latics number 17 was already a legend at the club, now he will take his place in the Wigan Athletic history book cementing his status
Latics boss Roberto Martinez spoke about Boycey being ‘Wigan Athletic through and through’ and also mentioned the fact that ‘he’s a great defender’
Speaking to the Latics official website Martinez said: ‘Emmerson deserves that record, it’s no coincidence he’s reached such a landmark’
‘It’s a huge achievement for someone who is Wigan Athletic through and through and someone who has experienced so much with the club.
‘He’s a great defender and in one-v-one situations has a real sense of responsibility and experience to come out on top.’
The man himself said: ‘It’s a fantastic honour for me
‘The fans gave me a fantastic ovation and I managed to bring my sons onto the pitch, a great day for me’
